Grünewald GmbH, a specialist in CNC turning and milling technology, stands for precision in metalworking. Over the past 40 years, this family-owned company has earned a reputation as a highly efficient contract turning and milling shop. In addition to small and medium-sized series, the company also produces custom and one-off parts.
Trochoidal milling cutter for stainless steel housings
Pokolm had the opportunity to support Grünewald in an exciting project. A stainless steel housing (1.4305 austenitic chrome-nickel steel) was manufactured for a sensor used in open-cast mining.
A Pokolm trochoidal milling cutter with a diameter of 12 millimeters was used. Trochoidal milling cutters offer impressive service life. As the milling cutters follow an elliptical path, uniform wrapping forces are generated, which minimize the load on the milling cutter. Milling with a trochoidal milling cutter offers significant advantages in terms of service life, machining time, and tool costs, especially when machining hard materials or titanium alloys.
Cutting data for stainless steel housing
| Milling cutter diameter | 12 mm |
| Number of teeth | 6 |
| Vc (cutting speed) | 196 m/min |
| n (revoltions) | 5200 1/min |
| fz (feed per tooth) | 0,08 mm |
| Vf (feed rate) | 2500 mm/min |
| ap (depth of cut) | 24 mm |
| ae (width of cut) | 1 mm |
| Q (time span volume) | 60 cm³/min |
At the end of the test series, it was clear that the process could be optimized with a trochoidal milling cutter from Pokolm. With the same chip volume, this tool achieved twice the service life. The doubled service life means 50% fewer tool changes. This is time that Grünwald employees can use for other projects. The trochoidal milling cutter also scored points in terms of economy. Tool costs were halved thanks to the process optimization.
