The transportation industry faces demanding but manageable technological challenges in machining. Large and complex components often have to be manufactured from high-performance materials that are difficult to machine, with extremely tight tolerances.  

Individual components of various modes of transportation are made from high-strength steels or alloys. High-performance materials increase resistance to mechanical stress while reducing weight for better energy efficiency. However, unlike softer steels or aluminum, these materials are not as easy to machine. They require special cooling lubricants, continuous process monitoring, and the right tool strategy, as temperature and vibration influences reduce tool life. 

In addition, components in the transportation sector are becoming increasingly complex. Large workpieces with complicated geometries are difficult to stabilize and manufacture accurately with tight tolerances. However, these components also have a greater impact on product performance and reliability. Especially in ship propellers, rail vehicle frames, or truck axles, any inaccuracy can lead to vibrations, increased wear, or safety issues.

Railcar bogie

In rail vehicles, bogies are mounted under the railcars to distribute the weight of the car body evenly across several axles, increase ride comfort, and guide longer railcars safely through tight curves. High-performance materials that reduce weight and lower energy consumption are also being increasingly tested for this component.

Excavator arm

The excavator arm is the central tool of an excavator. It performs the tasks of loosening, lifting, and moving material. As a supporting structure consisting of several highly stressed components, it is designed to absorb large alternating loads, impacts, and continuous fatigue. The individual components are large, tensioned welded structures and are therefore difficult to machine.
