The aerospace industry is growing rapidly, and as it grows, so do the demands on machining: increasingly complex designs require innovative tools and milling strategies.

Structural components require precision

The highest precision is required, particularly when machining structural components that reinforce the airframe and must withstand enormous aerodynamic and mechanical stresses. This often involves milling materials that are difficult to machine, such as high-strength aluminum or titanium alloys. The challenge here lies not only in the material itself but also in the typically complex geometries. In addition, extremely tight manufacturing tolerances must be maintained. A particular problem is the susceptibility to vibration in very thin-walled structures.

The new solid carbide end mill: a specialist for thin walls

The new solid carbide end mill was developed to meet these demanding requirements. The milling tool was specifically designed for finishing structural aluminum components and delivers excellent surface finishes and a level of precision that is virtually impossible to achieve with conventional tools.

A practical example illustrates its performance: During the production of a complex component for the aerospace industry, delicate geometries had to be machined that often push conventional milling processes to their limits. The innovative cutting geometry of the new solid carbide end mill optimizes heat dissipation and distributes cutting forces in such a way that no tool chatter occurs, even with unstable workpieces.

By using the new solid carbide end mill, we were able to significantly reduce the production time for this aerospace component. We are now able to machine walls as thin as 2 mm / 0.0787 inch with absolutely no vibration. This level of performance, combined with the highest surface quality, is currently a true unique selling point in the market.
